Although she never went home with an "American Idol" the title, Kellie Pickler was one of the show's best alumni. Her birth name was Kellie Dawn Pickler on June 28, 1986 in Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle to Cynthia Morton and Clyde Raymond Pickler. At the time of her pregnancy, her mother was 16 years old. The childhood was difficult for Pickler because her father struggled with addiction issues for both alcohol and substances while her mother left her in the early age of two. Morton came back to take charge for a few years, however Pickler said that it wasn't all that great. "I recall my mom with me were in the kitchen and I remarked, 'I'd rather God would take me away because I'd rather have my body taken away than to live together with you.' She got the kitchen knife out and put it in the middle of the counter. Then she said: "Here you go." I was in the fourth grade. It's a shame I didn't act on it. But, it did leave lasting scars on my heart. Pickler, who was then twelve years old, was handed over to Morton's grandparents after the court hearing. Pickler was raised by her grandmothers throughout her lifetime. She credits them with having the greatest influence throughout her life. Faye Pickler, the grandmother whom she raised, died from lung cancer in the year 2001. Her grandfather continued to look after Pickler. Pickler was a graduate of North Stanly high school located in New London (North Carolina).
